Free Classes!

Photo from the NYC Parks Dept Website

ShapeUp NYC is a FREE program sponsored by the NYC Parks Dept. Yes FREE!!!  They are offering FREE fitness classes every week across the city in their recreation centers and other locations through out the city. If the class is held at a rec center you do NOT need to be a member of the center to go to the class. They offer aerobics, yoga, pilates and the coveted Zumba. The only thing you need is a lock!

Walking 'Round the City

This morning I took a walk, 2.28 miles, 30 minutes, about 4.5mph.  I tracked my time with the FREE Nike+ app on my phone. Even with an app, I could have tracked my time with a watch and my distance (once I got home) on the Walk Jog Run site by "creating a route." You don't even need an account. Win!

NYC Parks Department!

So this is something I consider a great deal.. NYC Parks department have recreation centers all around the city, some actually have indoor pools available year-round!! They offer member only fitness classes, all access to the fitness equipment, gyms, and indoor tracks, use of game room equipment (mainly Fuseball, Pingpong, and Pool tables).

The membership for those 18 and older is $100 for access to any facility without a pool and with the pool is $150 for a YEAR. Thats $8.34 or $12.50 a month! You can purchase 6 month memberships as well, for $50 or $75. Under 18, FREE! Bring the kids.

I've been to the Jackie Robinson Center in Harlem. It is a little dark for my taste, they could use better lighting, but the equipment worked and it was relatively clean (gyms kinda skeeve me out). I've also been to the Chelsea Center in Chelsea. It is a newer center with an indoor pool, very bright, also relatively clean, but all the way over on the west side. I signed up for the 6 month membership at a facility with an indoor pool. I also signed my kids up. $75 for the family.. is not a bad deal at all.   Let me know what you think!

My First Post!

Hi!  This is my first post!

A little about me: native New Yorker, single mom to two great kids, I own a tax prep and bookkeeping company, I work full-time and I'm an MBA student. Busy.. yes. I have learned in the last few months, I have not taken care of myself as I should have since I've been taking care of everything else... So something had to change.

I created this blog for 2 reasons:

1. To show that getting in (and staying in) shape does not have to empty your pockets. You don't need fancy (and expensive gadgets), you can do more than jumping jacks and running in the park.

2. To help me stay accountable. I'm not a lover of exercise... but its a necessary evil... (Hopefully my views of exercise will change!)

Stay tuned!
